BAJA is part of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Design Series. It is a design competition for undergraduate students perusing a degree in mechanical engineering. The purpose of the competition is to provide real-world design experience and the challenges that come with it. It is the responsibility of the students to design, build, test, and compete with a vehicle that meets SAE standards. Students are also responsible for generating financial support for the project.

History of WVU Baja

• WVU has won the competition four times
• More than 20 Top 10 finishes
• Dr. Kenneth Means took over the program in 1986
• Hundreds of students have taken part in the project since its debut
