Dr. Hung-Liang (Roger) Chen, Professor, Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University (WVU). Dr. Chen received
his undergraduate civil engineering education from National Taipei Institute of
Technology, Taiwan and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in structural engineering
from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1985 and 1988, respectively. He
joined WVU in 1989 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate
Professor with Tenure in 1995 and promoted to Full Professor in 2000. He has
been extensively involved with research on structural dynamics, nondestructive
evaluation (NDE), wave propagation, and dynamic soil-structure interaction, and
has led the advancement and development of applying acoustic emission and other
NDE techniques to concrete, composites, timber and ceramic materials. He
currently conducts research projects in the areas of mass concrete, FRP
composite structures, dynamic characterization of damaged structures, acoustic
emission of steel bridges, laser vibration sensor and NDE of TBC. He has
published more than 150 technical articles. He is active in the ACI committees
of Lunar Concrete, NDE of concrete and FRP reinforced concrete, and ASCE
committees on experimental analysis and instrumentation committee and dynamics
committee of EMI. Dr. Chen is the recipient of the Young Researcher of the Year
Award, 1991-1992, from WVU College of Engineering. He also received Outstanding
Researcher Award, WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources for the year
2000-2001. He has been an invited speaker for more than 50 seminars at research
institutions and universities in the U.S., Canada and Taiwan to present his
research findings in the areas of nondestructive evaluation of civil
engineering structures, FRP materials and dynamic behavior of structures, and
he has received more than 40 research awards as Principal Investigator from
various funding agencies, such as NSF, U.S. DOE, WVDOT, U. S. Army, and Federal
Highway Administration. Dr. Chen
is a Fellow of ASNT.
